The short frame, the pipeline, and the archive.
Version 1.0 compresses every byte. Version 2.0 prioritizes speed over 10 Mbps and restores a protected frame after one lost half. Version 3.0 keeps a cache on a disk the customer runs. Every original in these tables was restored.
This mix
| File | Original | First frame | Next frame | zstd-3 | gzip-6 | lz4-1 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chat | 694 | 71 | 29 | 133 | 148 | 168 |
| Handoff | 2,172 | 108 | 46 | 218 | 232 | 268 |
| Logs | 12,800 | 85 | 29 | 87 | 143 | 143 |
| Mixed day | 15,668 | 205 | 46 | 370 | 437 | 509 |
| Sum | 31,334 | 469 | 150 | 808 | 960 | 1,088 |
First copy of the sum is 66.8102 to 1 and keeps $88.65 of a $90 illustrative terabyte at $0.09 per GB. Next copy is 208.8933 to 1 and keeps $89.57. zstd-3, gzip-6, and lz4-1 were measured on these bytes.
Pipeline
Megabits per second of original text on a full 10 Mbps pipeline of the next frame. The mix adds 2,078.933 Mbps. At 100 Mbps the mix carries 20,889.333 Mbps. The first frame of the mix, 469 bytes, carries 668.102 Mbps on a 10 Mbps pipeline.
Pair speed
| File | Jobs/s | Original | Wire | p99 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Chat | 70,972.21 | 49.255 MB/s | 2.058 MB/s | 0.445 ms |
| Handoff | 48,388.01 | 105.099 MB/s | 2.226 MB/s | 0.909 ms |
| Logs | 19,367.73 | 247.907 MB/s | 0.562 MB/s | 1.277 ms |
| Mixed | 17,312.14 | 271.247 MB/s | 0.796 MB/s | 1.548 ms |
Mixed text on that pair moved at 2,169.976 Mbit/s while the wire carried 6.368 Mbit/s. A second host ran logs at 163.751 MB/s. A third host ran logs at 102.019 MB/s. Frame sizes matched.
Archive
Keep the first frame and open the original later. The mix is 469 bytes kept and 31,334 opened, 14.967 GB kept per illustrative terabyte. The repeated 16 MiB line is 127 bytes kept and 16,777,216 opened, 7.569 MB kept per illustrative terabyte. zstd-3 on that 16 MiB line is 1,613 bytes.
In-process, version 1 at 10 Mbps finishes chat 7.6831 times sooner, a handoff 14.0441 times, logs 47.7366 times, and a mixed day 36.7324 times. At 100 Mbps those figures are 2.6260, 3.7803, 6.6793, and 6.4732. At $0.02 per GB, a terabyte of handoffs keeps $19.01 in the same illustration. Product page.
